ERT45R programming kit for testing Bosch VP44 and VR30 electronically controlled rotary diesel injection pumps. Includes programming smartcard, 2 m basic cable, application adapter cable, illustrated servicing manual and access to available test data. Digitally synchronized testing requires the 81.01.1A01 Digital Pump Phasing System together with the appropriate VP44/VR30 pump-specific phasing/integration equipment. The ERT45R programming kit enables the ERT45R application; it does not program or flash the Bosch PSG pump control unit.

Bosch VP44 / VR30: digitally synchronized pump testing

Control the pump directly through its sensors and actuators, synchronize the injection event with cam position and verify timing dynamically.

VP44 and VR30 are electronically controlled rotary pumps with their own pump ECU. With the ERT45R method, testing is performed by connecting to the pump sensors and actuators required for the test rather than using the pump ECU as the test controller.

Not a governor-position application

Unlike electronically controlled VE or in-line pumps, VP44/VR30 testing is not based on positioning a governor. Injection control is synchronized with the angular position of the pump cam.

The injection event is controlled in two stages. ERT45R can operate one cylinder at a time or all cylinders together, allowing the technician to work directly with the injection-control behaviour of the pump.

CHECK BEFORE TESTING

Start with the pulse wheel

Reliable synchronization depends on a correct position signal. Before evaluating the rest of the pump, the pulse wheel should therefore be checked for contamination or physical damage.

If the complete tooth sequence cannot be recognized correctly, the pump cannot operate correctly. Verifying this signal first avoids treating a synchronization problem as an actuator, hydraulic or calibration fault.

Diagnostic sequence: verify the pulse-wheel signal first → establish mechanical phasing / Zero Advance → set the angular reference → only then evaluate synchronized injection control and dynamic advance. A defective reference signal upstream makes the downstream test results unreliable.

Injection control, advance control and dynamic verification

Bosch VP44 SPV injection control valve

Two-stage injection control

ERT45R controls the injection event according to cam position and can operate a single cylinder or all cylinders together.

Bosch VP44 timing control valve for advance piston control

Timing Control Valve

As a rotary pump, VP44/VR30 uses an advance piston. ERT45R controls the timing valve that acts on this mechanism.

Dynamic advance measurement on Bosch VP44 VR30 pump

Dynamic advance measurement

The resulting advance is measured dynamically, allowing commanded timing and the mechanical response of the pump to be verified together.

Transfer pressure: ERT45R is also used to read the pump transfer pressure as part of the test.

PUMP PHASING BEFORE TESTING

Establish the mechanical zero before controlling injection

On VP44 / VR30 pumps, injection control is referenced to cam position. Before the electronic test can be meaningful, the pump therefore has to be mechanically phased to a known angular reference.

The ERT45R method uses the 81.01.1A01 Digital Pump Phasing System as the universal angular-reference base, completed by the appropriate VP44 / VR30 pump-specific mechanical integration equipment.

The objective is to establish Zero Advance: the mechanical reference from which commanded injection timing and actual advance can subsequently be compared.

STEP 1

Mount and connect the pump

Install the VP44 / VR30 on the test bench using the appropriate mechanical integration components and connect the angular-reference system.

STEP 2

Find the Zero Advance position

Rotate and position the pump according to the VP / VR procedure until the mechanical Zero Advance reference is identified. This establishes the real starting point for timing measurements.

STEP 3

Set the angular reference

Once Zero Advance has been established, the electronic angular reader is referenced to that position. The 81.01.1A01 system then provides the angular position used by ERT45R during synchronized operation.

STEP 4

Verify synchronization dynamically

With the pump running, ERT45R correlates cam position, injection command and the action of the advance mechanism so that synchronization and effective timing can be checked dynamically.

Why this matters: phasing is not only a mounting operation. It creates the angular reference required for the two-stage injection command and for evaluating the advance system. Without a reliable mechanical zero and a correct pulse-wheel signal, commanded timing and measured timing cannot be interpreted correctly.

Shared architecture with Denso ECD-V3 / V4 / V5

The principle is the same used by the ERT45R digital-pump architecture for Denso ECD applications: a universal angular-reference system provides the bench-side reference, while a pump-family integration kit adapts that system mechanically to the specific pump.

Phasing and dynamic advance are two different checks

Phasing establishes where the pump is mechanically positioned. Dynamic advance measurement verifies what the pump actually does after ERT45R commands the timing control valve during operation.

TEST THE PUMP WITHOUT TURNING EVERY TEST INTO AN ECU-PROGRAMMING JOB

ERT45R Programming Kit does not mean pump-ECU programming

These are two completely different operations.

The 81.01.1014 Programming Kit enables the ERT45R control unit with the functions required to test VP44 / VR30 pumps. It does not erase, flash or program the Bosch PSG pump control unit.

VP44 / VR30 pumps have their own electronic control unit. During the ERT45R test, that control unit is excluded from the test-control function: ERT45R connects directly to the sensors and actuators required to operate and evaluate the pump.

Bosch programming-based test workflow

The official procedure can require the program installed in the pump control unit to be removed, a standard test program to be installed for bench testing and the appropriate program to be restored after the test.

ERT45R functional test workflow

ERT45R operates the relevant pump sensors and actuators directly. When the PSG and its existing software are intact, functional pump testing therefore does not require ECU reprogramming to become a routine part of every test.

In workshop practice, actual PSG reprogramming is required in a relatively limited number of cases—for example when the control unit is physically damaged or its program has been erased. When programming really is required, it remains a separate proprietary Bosch operation.

Important distinction: ERT45R application programming = enabling ERT45R to test this pump family. Bosch PSG programming = writing software/data to the pump control unit. The first does not replace or perform the second.
